What a Historic Water Disaster Taught Me About Modern Tap Water
Living through the 1993 Milwaukee Cryptosporidium outbreak is something you never forget. As a kid, watching my family boil our drinking water while nearly 400,000 of our neighbors got sick—and 100 tragically died—completely shattered any illusion I had that the clear liquid coming out of the kitchen tap was inherently safe. That historic disaster, followed by a school field trip to the water purification plant on the shores of Lake Michigan, left me permanently skeptical. From that point on, my family always filtered our water. Like most people, we started with a standard commercial pitcher and eventually upgraded to a Reverse Osmosis unit, mostly because the unfiltered tap water smelled and tasted like a public swimming pool. For years, I didn't question the science behind it; I just knew that filtered water tasted better.
But as I dove deeper into the world of gut health, I began connecting the dots. I realized that merely filtering for taste isn't enough to protect our delicate microbiomes from the toxic cocktail lurking in municipal water supplies. The harsh reality is that modern water treatment relies on a heavy chemical toolkit designed to protect us from acute infection, but these very compounds create a state of biological mismatch in our bodies. Municipalities across US cities routinely add harsh disinfectants like free chlorine and chloramines, which are specifically engineered to kill living microbes in the pipes—meaning they can do a number on the beneficial microbes living in your gut, too. Worse yet, when these disinfectants react with naturally occurring organic matter in source water, they create highly toxic disinfection byproducts like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.
Beyond the intentional additives, our aging infrastructure and modern environment introduce a staggering list of unintentional contaminants before the water ever reaches your glass. As treated water travels through miles of distribution networks, it frequently leaches heavy metals like lead and copper straight from older service lines and household plumbing. In agricultural regions, runoff floods our water systems with hazardous nitrates, nitrites, and powerful pesticides like glyphosate and atrazine. Then there are the industrial "forever chemicals" like PFAS and PFOS, alongside volatile organic compounds, microplastics, and geogenic hazards like arsenic or chromium-6, all of which standard municipal plants are simply not equipped to completely eliminate.
This staggering chemical burden is precisely why I moved away from basic pitcher filters and chose portable gravity filters like our ProOne water filter system. Because it is portable, when its not on our counter its in our camper, or hotel room. Standard carbon filters are fine for catching basic odors, but they leave your gut entirely vulnerable to the heavy hitters. Our gravity filter systems use an advanced all-in-one ceramic and carbon-infused block media that rivals the rigorous contaminant removal of reverse osmosis without the massive water waste. . Independent lab testing shows it wipes out nearly 100% of the most dangerous gut disruptors, including lead, copper, agricultural pesticides, industrial VOCs, microplastics, and those resilient biological cysts that standard chlorination can miss. It even successfully knocks out 90% of added fluoride right out of the box without needing extra, bulky add-on attachments.
What I appreciate most about this level of filtration is its intelligent selectivity. While it aggressively strips away the microscopic threats, industrial byproducts, and swimming-pool-like chemical additives, it only partially reduces natural, fully dissolved elements like sulfates and total dissolved solids. By leaving behind a healthy balance of naturally occurring alkaline earth minerals like calcium and magnesium, it ensures the water isn't stripped "flat" or dead like distilled water. Instead, you are left with pristine, biologically appropriate water that actually tastes crisp and clean, allowing you to finally hydrate your body without accidentally altering the balance of your gut microbiome. But fixing your water is just one piece of a much larger puzzle.
Modern life has introduced dozens of these hidden "biological mismatches"—from the chlorinated water in our taps to the blue light in our eyes and the synthetic materials under our feet. Our modern environment is radically out of sync with our ancestral biology, and your gut, sleep, and energy are paying the price.
